...commenter no.21 - Carly from agirlandherblog

~ CONGRATULATIONS Carly some BIRTHDAY LOOT is heading your way! ~

A big thankyou to everyone who participated in my first ever blog giveaway, I've sincerely enjoyed reading all of your comments and meeting a few of you lurkers too. You know who you are. It's so nice to meet you!

Below are some action shots my lovely assistant took of the draw so you would know the giveaway wasn't rigged! We opted for an old-school method - numbers-in-a-hat style.

happy planet - challenge 4

Oh no I cracked! The mag challenge from Happy Planet - Challenge 2 came unstuck on Friday when I purchased The Age for the mag inside (Did you see it? Full page Pip, looking gorgeous!) and well, while I was there I picked up a copy of Frankie too! Oops. One month with no mag purchases is pretty tough for this gal. Having said that I've had more time to do other things I enjoy when I would normally be reading my mags. So, I think from all of this I have come to realise that my list of mags to purchase can be seriously culled to a select few. Top of the list for me - Frankie, Peppermint, King Brown and Wooden Toy.

Happy Planet - Challenge 3, went really well. My hair only got mistaken for a hand rail once, unidentified objects were stuck in my back, side and arm a total of 4 times plus I only experienced one delay, which was 4 minutes. Not too bad right? I ended up taking the train and not walking on all occasions except once, I car pooled with a workmate as Melbourne was hit by some pretty stormy weather. The big pro for me was not having to move my car during the day as there is no all-day parking near work. I think I might continue to take public transport from time-to-time. Sadly if it wasn't for the cost I would do it more.

Next fortnightly challenge - no meat Mondays and Wednesdays. This challenge was inspired by the campaign called Meat Free Mondays which I found out about over on the lovely Dear Plastic blog! I'm not the biggest meat eater but I have also never consciously considered how much meat I do eat. I look forward to seeing how this challenge goes.

it's a cats world

•• • •• • • A reminder entries to the giveaway have almost closed,
don't forget to comment if you would like to win! •• • •• • •

Since knitting the Odd-Bod kitty for the giveaway, things have been getting a little cat crazy around here!

For those of you who don't know me that well, I am definitely a cat lady. One who stops and talks to the cats she meets on walks.

A daily blog read of mine is called kittygenius, although not about cats, I'm attracted to the name as much as Ashely's lovely artwork and other snippets she shares. Ashley does however own the most adorable kitty, Iz.

I too own a cat, Millie the Burmilla. She especially likes cuddles in the mornings and helps make the bed.

Millie.

Having recently purchase a cute, kitty softie form the talented Anke Weckmann I was super delighted to come across her other blog this week, we say meow. All about cat artworks and artists' cats, Anke puts this blog together with fellow illustrator and cat lover Mary Kilvert.
Anke Weckman softie purchased from here.

On their blog is a post about the lovely Catherine Campbell and two of her gorgeous cat illustration of which I am lucky enough to own as prints! They are so good!

Catherine Campbell prints from here.

Plus a dear workmate recently surprised me with this cute gift!

So, it's little wonder my design for The Quilt Project features cats, nine in fact! It's even titled, 9 Lives, which I felt was also fitting because a quilt can have many lives during it's existence, especially if it becomes a family heirloom. With that said here is a sneak at my design. Now to get the red thread out and start!

picture songs

My partner came home with a gorgeous pocket sized, handmade zine the other night. Picture Songs, created in Melbourne, by Darby Hudson. (What a cool name!)

As stated in the back of the zine, "Darby Hudson has cartooned and written for the Chaser Newspaper, Inkgroup Greeting Cards and the Myer Melbourne Windows."

Here are some of my favourite pages.

Perhaps I could try this on Monday mornings...

Edit: I wish I could say my lovely partner had bought this sweet zine home for me the other night, he didn't, he was lucky enough to have been given it from the creator himself! They have both done a creative course together. I believe Darby has gone on to score a pretty neat copy writing job! Funny thing is he landed in the course after this idea - "One day I woke up and decided to apply for every job in The Age with this resume." Do check it out for more greatness!

For those of you wondering where you can get a copy of the Picture Songs zine, here is a stockist list which can also be found on Darby's website.

SAN FRANCISCO: City Lights, SYDNEY: Gleebooks, VICTORIA (mostly MELBOURNE): Angus & Robertson (City), Dymocks (City), Readings (Carlton, Hawthorn & St Kilda), Polyester (Brunswick), Brunswick Street Bookstore (Fitzroy), Metropolis (City), RMIT Bookstore, Greville Street Bookstore (Prahran), Melbourne Uni Bookstore, Handheld Gallery (City), Chronicles Bookshop (St Kilda), Farrells (Mornington), Page 8 (Mornington), Antipodes Bookstore (Sorrento).

happy planet - thrifting

Cute handmade linens I picked up thrifting last weekend. I plan to use these in place of disposable napkins. They would have been perfect during happy planet - challenge 1! Hope you enjoy your weekend whatever your getting up to.

pattern mash-up

I keep thinking about this lovely Sonia Delauny post over at AT SWIM-TWO-BIRDS. I need to get my hands on that wonderful book!
above images from here

AT SWIN-TWO-BIRDS, if you aren't already familiar is an amazing blog from the very talented Renilde Depeuter. Her incredible needlework absolutely has my heart.
above images from here

The reason for the Sonia revisit is, well, I'm not too certain but I seem to have patterns on my mind of late. They seems to be all I am seeing!

I've also been a follower of the delightful
Cecilia Pattersson since before I started my own blog and I've loved watching her journey, studying illustration/pattern design. This originally inspired me to start thinking patterns sometime last year.

I absolutely adore Cecilia's graduation exhibition outfit! How fun!

Lately the new
Mocium range has been popping up on various blogs too, with its beautiful patterns, which have me gushing. I was introduced to Mocium by their Fall 2006 range, I still love this photoshoot and have one of the pics on my pinboard at home.

Another pattern happy brand I've recently come across is, David David form the UK. So bright and fun. Although, I may be a little biased in my admiration as the red and yellow in the bottom right pic below makes me think of Australian lifesavers! See them?

Anyway, perhaps when I finish, or should I say at least start my redwork piece for The Quilt Project, complete this brooch and get started on the next stage for these little beards, I will begin experimenting more with my own pattern ideas. Why are there so many thing to do? Then again, maybe I'll start this too and finish the others later...hehe.

Oh, and just for fun, great blog
Pattern Pulp.

shady business

I love these little enamel pins from the talented duo who bring us Lola&Bailey.

These shadow puppet pieces also come as wall decals which are pretty neat! And some of my favs from Lola&Bailey, which I'm already lucky to have one in my collection, are these very affordable, art deco inspired necklaces.

Edit: Note to self - check spelling of post title, before posting!

win ~ birthday loot!

Wow I can't believe it has been 1 year today since I started blogging!

When I began I wasn't sure I'd keep it up for a week or month so it's a really nice surprise to still be posting one year on. Here's to many more!

A part of my motivation to continue is knowing someone out there might be looking in and enjoying what I share. Every comment is a nice surprise and I'd like to thank everyone who has stopped by over the past year, left a comment or even just lurked. I too was a lurker before starting my blog. It was the many blogs I lurked around that inspired and gave me the desire to start my own, along with a dear friends encouragement. So, a big thanks to everyone who's blog I've visited too!

••• •• •••• •••• • 1YR BLOG BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY • •••• • • • •••••

To celebrate this 1 year achievement I have put together a little giveaway, the first one handmaderomance has seen! Exciting! Included in the loot is a Donna Wilson cat I've been busy knitting from this fantastic book. Although my kitty has a little creative interpretation in her I think she is super neat and could soon be yours! Some of the other lovely goodies in this giveaway can be seen below.

So, if you would like to be in with a chance to receive the handmaderomance birthday loot simply leave a comment at this post. If you like, tell me what the best thing about blogging is for you, of course you don't have to this is just a suggestion on what you could comment about.

The winner will be drawn in a weeks time, entries open till then. Monday 24th ETA that is.

Good luck! x

handmade goodies

As you may have noticed I'm a pretty big etsy fan, there are simply too many unique and beautiful handmade items for me not to take notice. I'm an etsy addict for sure!

The latest handmade leather and faux-leather items to catch my attention are as follows, clockwise from top left; Black-Eared Creature Medallion from Sapien, Marie's Ruffly Necklace from Louloudo, Gretel Leather Tote Bag - Brown Sugar from Rennes le Chateau (I've got a big crush on this bag!) and Mary-Jane Moccasins - Made to Order from Spirocreations.

glowing kitty

Oh no! My cat is glowing. I think she swallowed a torch! No. Wait. That's a handmade, organic cotton, cat lamp!

I'm sure my cat would try and unravel this like a giant ball of wool but I still think it's pretty neat! Found at this etsy store.

eleanor grosch

I love these illustrations from Eleanor Grosch of Pushmepullyou Design.

You can find out more about Eleanor over
here. I was interested to read she always liked to draw animals and rarely drew people. And it wasn't until some time after illustrating that she found out about Charlie Harper who she describes as 'the mentor she never knew she had!'

happy planet - challenge 3

image from here

Look out public transport here I come! This fortnight's challenge is to use public transport to get to/from work at least two days each week.

I know I should be doing this one more. If I felt confident enough to tackle Melbourne's roads on a pushy I would. It just doesn't seem natural (read 'safe') to be so close to cars while on a bike! Perhaps I'm just a chicken?

As for taking public transport Melbourne's system is... well, not the best, especially during peek hour. For me it cost less to drive my small car to work, its quicker, my car doesn’t cancel or become delayed and I only have to put up with my own BO, which of course I don’t have (ha). I'll probably end up walking instead of taking PT (during peek hour) which can't hurt, I could certainly do with the extra exercise! Either way one less car on the roads for a bit has got to be a good thing.

The magazine and paper reduction challenge is still carrying over too as mentioned and doing really well. I find the best way to avoid temptation is to simply ‘avoid’ it. No Magnation for me! Plus I spotted this over on The Design Files which is some help.

These challenges have been good, they definitely get me thinking of ways to be as friendly as I can to our environment. What I'm doing might seem small to some, but for me it's important to be trying and doing something, I believe every, little bit counts!

Found this 'Facts & Figures' list on ZeroWaste, which has lots of great snippets such as;

'Recycling a glass jar saves enough energy to light a bulb for four hours.'

Fun, redecorated ceramics from Ninainvorm.

c is for cookies

After yesterday's trip I decided to make some cookies as a little gift for a friend I'm visiting today.

With the special Handmade Help Recipe Book having arrived in last weeks post I thought I'd give something new a try. While flicking through it's pages I came across a recipe titled, 'Best Chocolate Chip Cookies Ever'. Great! How could I go wrong?
A little while later I noticed this recipe had been contributed by lovely blogger, Becka from Bliss in a Teacup. As soon as I realised this I knew I was on to a good thing. In the past I've gotten a delicious hummus recipe from Becka which is now a favourite. And yes, quality control soon confirmed not long after the first batch came out of the oven, these cookies do not about disappoint! Yummo Becka, you've done it again!!
Since this was a bit last minute I didn't have anything to package the cookies in. While wondering what to do, I remembered a fantastic tutorial by How About Orange on how to turn an envelope into a goodie bag. Problem solved. Not bad for a daggy C4 office envelope!

* Edit: Visit was canceled due to bad weather across the state of Victoria. Cookies still made it to friends via the post and reports tell me they are being well received!

treasure hunting

Today we went for a lovely drive down to Mornington, roughly one hour south-east of Melbourne.

Below are some pics from the fossicking fun, 60,000 square feet of antiques and bric-a-brac goodness called, Mornington Antique Centre. Open 7 days, 10am-5pm, 65 Tyabb Road, Mornington.

The 'Budget Tin' above had coin slots in the lid and a compartmental tray on the inside. The words on the lid read, Phone, House Keeping, Bread, Milk, Insurance, Rates, Gas/Electricity and House Payments! Cute, I thought. If only those items could be payed for with a little pile of coins today!

More tins! And the last pic below is a cookie jar I couldn't bear to leave behind (ooo bad pun joke - sorry!).

There were so many other items we were tempted to purchase but the reality is for now, we just don't have the space.
