pretty trim

These gorgeous, vintage trims arrived in the mail today. Purchased from here. So pretty!

Also, have you had a peek at the leaked Alice in Wonderland trailer? So good!

blog love

I stumbled across Privelidge House the other day while reading Mel Stringers blog. Privelidge House belongs to the super talented Caitlin Shearer.

You may be familiar with Caitlin's work, she is going great guns around the place with her first solo show earlier this year, a feature in Dujour Magazine, some rather adorable work for Hopeless Hotel and the like. If you aren't so familiar with her work do check out her flickr pages and etsy store.

Caitlin has a regular blog too which I was aware of, but the other she is involved in - Privelidge House full of artist interviews
was news to me. I love this sort of thing! A little sneak peak into the minds of creative types. Great reading, of which I now have heaps to catch up on! Crazy thing is nearly all of the lovely talents interviewed are in their teens / early twenties and they are all so, so good!

one more book

I spotted this Donna Wilson book at a local bookstore... by accident... I didn't know it existed. Somehow it came home with me!

Donna's odd-bod bunch would have to be some of the coolest knitted characters around. I've been wanting to try something like these for a while. I've had couple of ideas in my head but have not known where to start. I think this book will make for good, crazy critter, knitting practice. Don't you?

That's all the new books for now, although I have my eye on this super design guide.

new books

Ceramic Artist, Helen Beard

Chandelier Maker, Madeleine Boulesteix

Milliner, Pip Hackett

How neat is this giant potholder rug! I want!

As promised pics of some books I recently purchased. Two Paumes books from Lark. They books arrived in lightning speed - thanks Alison!
Both absolutely gorgeous. I'm particularly loving all the layers and details to the imagery in London Ateliers. Stockholm's Love Apartments, is also beautiful, interestingly most of the spaces shown have a white base with lots bright colour added through homewares etc, which works so well, I think!

tea for two

Things are a bit cosier around here, now that our heater is fixed! It took nearly two weeks for the repair man to come so I guess there were a few people in the same predicament. Luckily we had a small backup, we're in the middle of winter so it's been pretty cold.

Also keeping cosy - my teapot with it's new tea cosy. I finished it earlier this week. No pattern, which is probably obvious to some. It's pretty much just a knitted rectangle folded in half and stitched up the sides with holes in the right places. It may be a tiny bit big, not to worry, I had fun making it anyway!

happy planet - challenge 1

Having joined 1 Million Women back in June, I feel I need to step things up a little in addition to choices/actions I already make. So, I am challenging myself to do something different every fortnight that will help make a difference to our planet, no matter how large or small because I believe every bit counts.

To begin, this fortnight the challenge is not to use any disposal food and beverage items eg: napkins, coffee cups, cutlery, takeaway containers!

This challenge has been inspired by the super neat, keep cup I picked up on the weekend.

If you would like to join in or perhaps suggest a challenge for coming weeks I would love to know!

words and pictures : joy

Joy wasn't so sure her name was all it was cracked up to be.

Most of the time Joy felt cranky and bossed everyone around. She didn't always mean to but it just seemed to be the way she was.

Joy would get hassled by her classmate who could see the irony in her name.

So one day Joy decided to change her name, to Surly! Yep. Surly. She hoped this would create the opposite so she could live the rest of her live joyfully...

More about joy over
here.

art, design, crazy drivers and more...

Some items from today's adventure.

Today was quite busy for a Sunday, a good busy though. First stop, Green-Wood Gallery in South Melbourne to check out 'Such is Life', an exhibition featuring artists James Reka and The Yok. A great subject, exploring the values and attitudes of life as an Australian bushranger with a modern twist. I really love Reka's confident brushwork on canvas, he has such a strong, refined graphic style.

Wall outside the Green-Wood Gallery.

Before leaving the area I quickly stop by the wonderful Coventry Bookstore, after all it is literally around the corner. No buying today, I restrain myself! I've bought a couple of books recently. Hopefully I'll get time to show them to you this week.

The main reason I'm in this part of town howver is to donate blood so off I go. It has been a while since my last donation. I'm often near anemic so can't donate. Luckily today my red cells were hitting the right numbers and I am able to go through! It was busy, to say the least, which is excellent to see but also equals a long wait... perfect for some catch up reading.

Once done donating I make my way through the CBD, when... out of the blue I almost get completely side swiped by a crazy, driver going too fast to slow down when the car in front of him makes a turn. He reacts by swerving into the next lane. Hello! I am driving in the next lane. Brakes slam, horns honk and my heart rate goes through the roof. All I can say is, lucky there were no trams because the only reason I didn't get hit was by freakishly swerving out of the way onto the tram tracks at lightning speed! Phew!

I was planning to stop in the city to try and find the 'Looking to the Past' exhibition which I failed to find yesterday but decided after that little episode to get out of there as soon as I could!

BTW if anyone knows where the Looking to the Past, exhibition is, I would love to know. It's part of the State of Design Festival, the guide says it's at Fashion Incubator in Melbourne Central but when I went on Saturday it was all locked up with a sign saying they were in the process of moving...?

Inside the Exhibition Building. Image from here.

Instead I head straight to Design Made Trade - the State of Design Festival's design fair. I thoroughly enjoyed taking my time looking around all the exhibits here. Held in the beautiful Exhibition Building the setting alone is amazing. And unable to resist a couple of purchases I picked up Keep Cups for me and the boy. A smart, stylish, greener alternative to takeaway coffee cups! I was also tempted by a Victoria Mason piece I have been wanting for so, so long...finally it's mine! Only problem is, now I have my eye on more and not a birthday in sight!

So cute. I realise the printed version of the Victoria Mason Sharpening necklace matches the life size one.

The day ended back at home with a little nap, which always happens after giving blood, followed by some knitting. A little tea cosy project, I will show you soon it is almost complete.

I hope you enjoyed your Sunday.

P.S. Tomorrow night I am off to Design of the Times thanks to Lucy at The Design Files. I can't wait.

silly love is good

This morning was going along like any other. Running late, heading out the door with a quick, 'I love you...have a good day...see you tonight!'. When half way out the door my guy says, 'Wait! Do you remember this?' and I'm thinking, 'What? This better be good I need to go.'

He breaks out in song... 'We've got two strong hearts, we stick together like the honey and the bees. You and me...'
Hilarious! (I know you Aussie readers will recognise these lyrics. Lucky you, to those that don't, it was stick in my head for ages).

Hilarious in itself and extra funny as this guy is a big Hip Hop fan, breaking out Farnsy - what the!

So my response along with a cheeky chuckle goes, 'Yeah of course! When I was in Grade 3 two buddies and I made up a dance to it that went like...' and I proceed to vaguely remember and act out dance moves that are like word actions to the lyrics. To which he grins and replies, 'Oh, of course you did!' with a nod and look that clearly says, 'Not at all what I was expecting. Lucky I love you. You Idiot!'

And off I go for the day.

All true.

And it's the silly moments like these that remind me I am so luck to have found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with!

This reminds me of the below words I came across some time ago over here on the lovely Rockstar Diaries blog. I think this sum things up pretty well.

We are all a little weird and life's a little weird,
and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours,
we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness
and call it love.

girlie pains

The pics above are of the latest Girlie Pains Mini Comic zine set which can be found over here. Crafted by Mel Stringer who's handiwork is regularly seen gracing the pages of much loved Frankie magazine, this little zine set came with a sweet handwritten note from Mel herself! Awe.

I'm intrigued by Ms Stringer and her work, it's youthful, sometimes a little cheeky / sad / angry, and often in-your-face yet still pretty and feminine. There is a realness and true energy to it that I really like! Mel also does some amazing portrait work which you can see over on her Flickr pages. I think these are super fantastic and well worth a look! If you want more on Mel she has a blog too.

words and pictures : green

I know a girl who loves green shoes more than me. And that's somethin' 'cause I do love the colour green, not all shades, some remind me of a school uniform for which I wasn't very keen!

For more green goodness look over
here.

evan b harris

I've mentioned before about the pillowcases I purchased from Thirddrawerdown by Evan Harris, I'm loving them! So, on further investigation into Evan's work I came across these...

images from here. there are more, check them out if you wish!

...how absolutely magnificent! Evan you can paint my walls any day.

This mural is at the Ace Hotel in Portland, which sounds like an interestingly creative place to stay, if ever in that part of town.

berkley illustration

Dapper looking folk spotted over at the Berkley Illustration etsy store. Don't you think they would give Mole from Wind in the Willows a run for his money in the wardrobe department?

Illustrator Ryan is one half of the team behind blog Let's Share, the other half is his partner Lucy who is handy with a camera and has her own etsy store over here.

I love these cute needlework buttons and paper goods from etsy seller thepinpals. Sweet!

blog lovin'

The lovely Pip from Meet Me at Mikes gave me a blog award a little while ago and guiltily I'm only getting around to passing it on this afternoon! Slack I know, but what are ya gunna do.

I started blogging around 11 months ago now and am really enjoying the journey it's taking me on. Mostly I started through encouragement and from constantly being inspired by other bloggers. One of my aims was to post about the things I make with the hope that my blog would act as a kind-of motivational tool. Admittedly though sometimes I spend far too much time reading blogs instead of actually making, but then where would we be without those who do exactly that? It's nice to know there are people out there stopping on by, it helps keep us motivated. Right?

That said, the following 15 blogs I'm going to pass this award on to are, some newbies, some oldies and some goodies I always enjoy stopping in on... but let it be know there are many, many more!

test everything

Cover by Matt Lyon

All images shown above are from Test Everything's Flickr.

You may remember this
post I did a little while back on Rand Renfrows' Test Everything zine. For those of you who aren't familiar with this project the idea is; Rand comes up with a theme, submission is open to all, any skill level, from anywhere in the world. 16 pieces are then chosen and screenprinted into a great little limited edition zine. The first issue is sold out but the second issue has just been completed so you can grab a copy here.

Rand is in the mist of printing the third issue (stay tuned I have a little surprise in there for you) and submissions for
issue 4 are currently open. The theme for issue 4 is 'Hugs will save us' so get your doodling hats on and submit something it'll be fun! If your piece gets selected you get your very own copy of the issue it appears in, for free!

matchbox cuteness

Images from here.

Sweet little matchboxes artworks I came across today. They are by Jenny Meilihove who lives in Israel with her boyfriend and cat called Blueskii. Cute. No? I'm loving the check table cloth and wee little books.

fossils found

I don't know much about these guys, I spotted them last weekend outside the City Museum. They are on concrete slabs that I guess double up as seating and are around 30-40 cm long. Strange but rather adorable too in an unexpected way. If anyone know more about these little sculptures I'd love to know!

melbourne treasure

How beautiful is this mosaic mural by Melbourne's living treasure, Mirka Mora? I adore this piece so much although sometimes I think it's location is a bit of a shame, it feels somewhat under appreciated. I do however love that it's accessible to all but get the feeling not too many people actually see it even though hundreds pass it daily.
