words and pictures : rainy day

The perfect way to spend a rainy day for me is snug indoors, making things, listening to good tunes and drinking tea. Bring on the rain, I say!

Where have I been?

While checking out the new paper cutting skills of the talented Clare from Loobylu, I followed a comment link from SEWFUNKY which lead to another adorable clip from Lisa Hannigan! So much beautiful paper cutting!! I think I have a little crush on this girl, her film clips are the cutest.

little painted home

This little space is quite incredible. The paintings bring beauty and magic to a building that otherwise would be quite unmemorable.

I would love to take a closer look. Wouldn't you?

If only I could read the story that goes with these images. I'm not even sure what language it's in, I'm guessing Estonian as the website is .ee, if anyone can shed light I'd love to know!

blanket and more

You may already be familiar with blanket magazine. It's an online mag always full of inspiring, creative people. If you aren't, I do highly suggest taking a peek, the current issue will be the last issue free to download. Understandable in these times plus I never quite get how such great and obviously hard work is available for free!
Image from Betsy's Flickr

Via the latest issue of blanket I came across
Betsy Walton a very talented painter and illustrator from the US. I love the colours in Betsy's work, the bright pops of colour some in settings of nature, be it underwater or on land. There is a folk like quality in the shapes and patterns formed in her work as well that I'm really drawn to. For more on Betsy you can check out her blog and even buy prints of her work over here.

What a lovely song. I adore the pop-up books in this clip!

crochet inspiration

Top image, my effort Monday night.
Below image, a random crochet whatever I want effort.

Monday evening I went to Brown Owl’s crochet night which was lovely and chatty, not to mention full of tea and biscuits! And boy are there some talented ladies out there. This lady in particular bought along some super projects to show. Thanks Lara, very inspiring!

I kind of learnt the Grannie Square last year at Brown Owl’s but hadn’t really practiced so I was a bit rusty on this classic little number. With help from the always friendly Owlette’s it soon came flooding back! ‘Like riding a bike’ a Wise Owl said. So true.

Crochet pieces inspiring me at the moment:

How gorgeous is this mat! Spotted over here.

Yes please! I want this badly. Image from here. And these too!

Beautiful potholders at Mieke. This display is just gorgeous!

macraMe

How cute are these macrame owl necklaces by macraMe? Another one to add to the wish list. Found via the lovely Penguin & Fish.

the art of failure

Hmm...I posted over here about my current obsession; to finish knitting my first project on double ended needles.

'Almost there!' I said.

Little did I know things weren't going quite to plan!! Hence two different sized booties in the above pic. I knitted a third, different again. Closer, but just too different to make a set.
It's hard keeping the same tension on any given day, don't you think?

I started fresh in a different colourway (I was bored working in the original colours) which got closer, but after completing the sole on the second bootie I realised I'd dropped a stitch and had to unpick the whole sole. There may be hope for this pair yet! I will attempt that little sole yet again.

I know I'm an amateur here and since this is my first time using double ended needles I won't beat myself up over my gazillion attempts to knit these darn little booties. I like a challenge. I like making new things that also require new skills. I refuse to give up and with any luck I will soon be posting about a matching size pair of booties. I will not let these crazy needles have their way with me! No. I will NOT fail this project. Ok, well perhaps I'll preserver for a little while longer and if I don't succeed that's ok too, I know I have tried my best.

growing

The seeds I planted a while ago are doing quite well. The basil is used the most in cooking that gets done here. However the pots are a little small for some but when I replant to larger ones on the balcony they just don't get enough sun to grow. Oh well, little pots on the window sill will be fine for now.

words and pictures : collecting

I wish for this collection to keep growing! To see more people collecting hop over here.

flaunt it!

There is someone I have been meaning to share with you for quite some time. You may of course already be familiar with this someone but for those of you who aren't I came across her about a year ago over here. From this first taste I was in awe and wanting more. Those illustrations! That cat! I excitedly made my way over to her blog The Moldy Doily which quickly became a regular blog stop and to my delight there was more to be seen of dear Georgie Boy (That cat!).

This super talented and who appears to
be super fun gal is none other than Kime Buzzelli!

Kimes living the dream as artist, fashion designer and up until recently shop owner, sadly her brick and mortar shop in L.A. closed it's doors. As I read her blog posts about the heartache of this decision and the stories of the shops' colourful life I felt a tear in my eye and I'd never even stepped foot inside this enchanting, daydream of a space. I can't begin to imaging how hard this decision must have been.

Sadness aside with the thought of one door closing and another one opening I can't wait to see where the talented Kime Buzzelli heads next. There is still her online store
to keep an eye on and there has already been a collaboration with Vans resulting in some pretty colourful kicks my feet would happily wear! Kime, I'll be watching you - in a good way of course!

Having said all of that what prompted me to do this post was a little weekend magazine flicking which reminded me how earlier this year while in NYC I stopped in my tracks. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted Flaunt (Issue 95, Growing Pains) covered with Kime goodness. A no hesitations purchase. Here are some pics of said Flaunt issue I have been meaning to share!

found

I found this little feather on my car tyre it's only about 20mm long. It's very cute. I also wish I had a better camera for a nicer pic.

millie the moose (yes, i'm aware she's really a cat)

This little girl makes me smile everyday. She is a great little friend.

I hope you all get the chance to spend Easter with great friends and family too.

tagged

I was tagged by the lovely Ebony from Hello Sandwich to answer these questions.

What is your current obsession?
To finish successfully knitting my first project on double ended needles...almost there!

What are you wearing now?
Nothing as glam as dear Ebony... daggy grey bonds trackpants and a threadless T, not to mention my Kermit green socks in the below post. I know. What can I say. Very attractive!

Do you nap a lot?
Oh how I wish...

If you were a tree, what tree would you be?
A short one. Haha! However I would like to be a Willow tree or an Orchid tree.

What's for dinner?

Leftovers.

What was the last thing you bought?
Hot chocolate.

What are you listening to right now?
Unusually nothing, the hum of my computer is about all I can hear and the keyboard clicking as I type. It is late and quiet.

What is your favorite weather?
A perfect autumn day. Fresh morning, pretty leaves, enough chill to wear layers with the occasional sunshine to take some layers off and a cool evening to end the day with lots of cosiness and a good nights sleep.

What is on your bedside table?
The dreaded alarm clock, a White Jasmine Voluspa candle, a yellow jewlery tree covered in necklaces and bangles, two wooden boxes; one for brooches and one for ear rings, two little purple and pink bowls from Dinosaur Designs for my rings, Jasmine and Poutculi perfumes from Havana 1791 in Cuba, hair elastics, eye mask and Thirst Quencher Vitamin E Body Cream from Bloom.

What is your most challenging goal right now?
Running to get fit...

Say something to the person who tagged you.
Two words : job envy! Only joking... well kind of. Actually I would like to say, hi ebony could you please show us more of your lovely work on your super blog some time, i think you're works awesome and would love to see more. Oh and happy Easter xx

If you could have a house anywhere in the world, where do you want it to be?
NYC or on an isolated rolling green hill overlooking the ocean with a lighthouse in view from my kitchen window...not sure what country this is in but it pops in to my dreams every now and then and I love it! There are no fences just open green lushness and a plentiful veggie garden... not that I know much about gardening!

What can’t you live without?
Creativity, love, music, kindness, food and sleep.

What was the last book you read?
Im such a bad book reader. The last book (not magazine) I read was Roald Dahl's, Kiss Kiss, a collection of short stories. Great cover!

If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would you go?
Michelangelo lookout, Florence or Park
Guell, Barcelona.Last movie you watched?
The Royal Tenumbaums..

If you would like to join in too please do. I tag you.

words and pictures : cold feet

Cold feet... not anymore!

I can't stand having cold feet and as a result have a slight obsession with kooky knee-high socks. The ones pictured are my cabel knit Kermit green knee-highs. Safely worn around the house so as to not embarrass those I know!

diy project : design sponge

A couple of weeks back I spotted this cute diy post over on one of my daily reads, design*sponge. My first attempts went to my mum for use in her new kitchen. However since this is quite a quick and easy little project I decided to do a few more for myself. I like the idea of a reusable cloth, less wastage than disposables...although more laundry...hmm.

help! I have an addiction

One of my new year resolutions was to stop buying countless numbers of magazines. For one, the majority of their pages would end up in landfill and two, I could go broke quite quickly if I kept it up. Plus I was barely finding the time to read them all, not to mention I'm lucky enough to work somewhere there is always a pretty good supply (although a little on the trashy side)! You see, I loose all sense when I walk into a store selling any number of great magazines, I can't help myself. I'm not sure if it's their freshly printed pages, endless eye candy or knowing how much I enjoy sitting down on a quiet night flicking and reading through their crisp yummy pages. Nothing beats the tactility of a printed page and lets face it I don't have the concentration span to finish epic novels.

Frankie was the only exemption from my resolution as I always read every page, that to me was good reason and I couldn't go cold turkey. The plan was not to buy any other magazines unless absolutely necessary. Whatever that meant. I don't really know when it is absolutely necessary to own any magazine. Anyhow things were going ok until this week. First there was my subscription to Peppermint and then all willpower went kaput when I entered a shop I had a voucher for
and they didn't have the book I had planned to buy!

So, instead of my usual Friday Five I thought I'd share links to the FIVE super great magazines I ended up walking out of the bookstore with!!

vintage treasures

Last weekend I caught up with a good friend who lives in Bendigo (about 2 hours drive from Melbourne). It just so happened that she lives right near a market which is held every Sunday. Lucky for me this meant finding a wonderful vintage sewing pattern for a jacket style I had been looking for. It's the one on the left in the pic below. A simple, versatile style. Now to find some fabric to make it in!
The other vintage coat pattern, on the right, is one I bought from here last year thinking I would have it well and truly made in time for winter this year. Ha! Who was I kidding! My 'Things to Make' list is a little out of control and I haven't done any sewing for myself in ages. I may just have to lock in a sewing weekend in the not too distant future me thinks. But again I need to find some great fabric first!

giving and receiving

There has been some present giving......and some lovely surprise present receiving going on of late. I'm feeling very lucky as it's not even my birthday! You may recognize the wrapping on the left in the top pic, it was a poster in an issue of Frankie magazine done by the lovely Mandy of Belle and Boo fame. I have no where to hang these posters which are always adorable so I recycle them as wrapping paper. This one especially was too cute not to pass on!

And how fitting that Mandy also created the Meet Me at Mike's logo! Not however on the Meet Me at Mike's book featured in the bottom pic but I do believe it is on their blog. This delightful book, full of 26 crafty projects by some super talented people is so adorable, the contents page is too cute for words and it also features some very beautifully photography throughout. I can't wait to give these projects a go and
I can't stop flicking through it, every time I find something new to admire! There is even a recipe for Pink Lamingtons thrown in for good measure!!
