wooly times

I recently finished the quick-to-make, chunky scarf seen in progress above and next on the wooly to-do-list I would like to make a tea cosy perhaps like this one posted on Pip's Brown Owl blog, and some pot holders like these. I don't know about you but there's something about the colder weather that makes me want to knit/crochet any spare minutes away! Although in my case it could be hereditary, my mum is always making something wooly! Speaking of my mum, while on the Brown Owl Member's blog recently I also spotted this post from Brissy BO mum Sandra which reminded me of something I got my mum to make quite a few years back...

...thanks Mum, I still have this bag and now that I know how to crochet I know how much effort you put in.

And while of the topic of Brown Owls, I'm off to a meeting tonight to check out some Gocco printing - should be fun!

city adventures

Yesterday I went on a little adventure in Melbourne city.

I'd heard about the Break a Leg exhibition on at City Museum featuring Dame Nellie Melba (who you might have seen on our one hundred dollar note) so I decided to start here. The exhibition was quite small but included some beautiful pieces, such as costumes and costume designs from Melbourne's early theater days and this super large Louis Vuitton hat box belonging to the dame!

Making my way down Flinders Lane as I wanted to take a look in at eg.etal I stopped at Craft Victoria. So glad I did there was so much good stuff here (as usual) and I was tempted into buying a new brooch, by Scotatto to add to my little collection plus cute Thirddrawdown pillowcases by Evan Harris, I had been spying these for some time. There were also a couple of great exhibitions on at Craft Victoria, one in particular I found really captivating in a kind of strange way - Morphed, by Emma Davies. There are some pics of Emma's exhibition over here.

Next on to eg.etal, so good, before making my way to Metropolis and Magnation, these two stops involved lots of browsing but no buying... for now, although titles were added to the wish list!!

Finally after wandering and taking in a few more gorgeous spots I headed on to NGV to look at the Persuasion: Fashion in the Age of Jane Austen exhibition. I was almost going to check out the Dali exhibition too but with tired legs I opted out, plus I was lucky enough to see the Dali Museum in Figueres, Spain last year so I figured it wasn't so bad I missed this one.

movin' it

Crafty clouds spotted in the window of a Lee Mathews store while I was Movin' it Like Mike. I thought these guys were too cute to keep passing on my run not to share with you, so I went back with my camera. Speaking of Mike... the loveable Pip from Meet Me at Mikes gave this little blog an award, so nice. Thank you Pip! There are lots of great links on Pip's award list to check out too. Ain't blog lovin' a beautiful thing. You'd better watch out because I might just be passing this one on to you!

posted goodies

A very, dear friend has been a little unwell. Since we live in different towns I decided to send her a goodies pack via the post to brighten her day, including a crocheted scarf I made. Knowing how much I love a good, surprise, postie pack it is needless to say my plan worked. Postie pack = Brightened day!

wonderland

images from here

Did you see? Did you see? Some pics of Tim Burton's, Alice in Wonderland have been released. I am so excited and can't wait to see this! Look at that makeup and wardrobe! Also staring Aussie girl Mia Wasikowska as Alice, another good reason to check it out... not until 2010 though.

A couple of extra pics over here, one in particular sporting greenery I think Edward Sissorhands would be proud of.

P.S. A big thanks to all who left a lovely comment on the below post or any in the rest of that series they are all so special to me. And a super dooper thanks to Kirsty for her shout out which was spotted by Craftzine and to the lovely Emma who alerted me to it. How cool is that?

in progress - part 4 : the finale!

In stage 3 all hand embroidery was complete.

The faces were done on uncut fabric so I could use the hoop, so first up I trim these to size. All pieces are now ready to face the sewing machine.

Before stitching anything together I lay everything out to ensure nothing is missing and to figure out what is best to sew together first.

In this case I stitch down the pants, feet and hair first before stitching on some bright yellow buttons to the front of their braces.

Next up I stitch together the front and back pieces of their arms and ears which look a little something like this.

Now for the step I think is most exciting - stitching the main front and back pieces together with arms and ears also attached. I like this part because as you sew everything is inside out so you still, really aren't 100% sure how the end result will look until...

... surprise, you turn them the right way out and fill them with filling! Their heads aren't quite done here in the final pics but I think you will get the idea.

Both of these little guys now have new homes.

It has been fun sharing this little 'in progress' project and I would like to thank you for all the lovely comments. If I was to do something like this again I would do it in the summer months when there is more light for photography but I hope you have enjoyed following along as much as I have enjoyed sharing this with you all.

words and pictures : rose

Roses are beautiful. They are my Nana's favourite flower. I don't have a favourite flower, I change my mind too often for favourites although Orchids are one I constantly like. I do however have a soft spot for Rose flavoured Turkish Delight! Mmmmm yum! Click here for more things rosie.

got time?

Probably not, time being a precious commodity and all. But just in case you had nothing to do I thought I'd share with you this little spot I came across the other day, called pdf-mags.com. It has lots of great links to sites with online mags. One that caught my eye and I had not seen before was GizMag with it's super cute cover illustration by the fab duo over at 64 Colours. (Below pics of GizMag.)64 Colours also have a blog, if you needed something else to do you could check it out.

And the current issue of GizMag features Aussie girl, Lang the mastermind and talent behind
Akina. Not to mention Kristen the 23 year old, fashion designer from Belgium with her own label Titi & the German Kid. She also knows how to pimp out the cutest canvas shoes (Pic of her shoes below, from Flickr).
Ooow dear internet, how I love the little journeys you take me on but if only you could freeze time...

Below are more links to really good art/design places you might like to spend a little time at. I have. It was fun and I just might go back but for now my online time is up!!

etsy treasure!

Unique little Mooks found at I Love Grey Skies on etsy. A tad strange perhaps but I like, yes I do!

in progress - part 3

So on with the show I go, with parts 1 and 2 complete stage 3 calls for a little hand stitching. Firstly I pin together the parts I wanted to stitch and pick out the colours of floss I want to use.

For these softies I've decided to hand stitch little elbow patches on the arms, braces and pockets on the pants, some detailing on their hair and embroider their faces.

Stitching the fabric pieces together is quite straight forward, I use mostly running stitch as I wish to keep the look quite naive and carefree. The faces take a little more work.

For the faces I get out more tracing paper and trace over the final full size picture I drew to create the pattern pieces from. I pin this down to the uncut piece of body material and then begin to stitch over the lines on the tracing paper, taking the needle through the paper and material.

Continuing until complete I then remove the paper.

For softie #1 I have a felt mustache to stitch down. Then to finish embroidering the face of softie #2 before things get a bit more exciting and take on more shape! Stay tuned...

bristol boy

photos from here

Wishing I was in Bristol to see Banksy's latest show. If you're into his work some pics from this show can be found here and there is a trailer on his site worth checking out - don't miss the monkey. And, if you are in Bristol, well, lucky you this show is free!

as day follows night : sarah blasko

Fans of Sarah Blasko take note, pre-orders of her third album, As Day Follows Night, can be made over here. Due for release July 10. The first 1,000 pre-ordered copies come signed as part of a super cute limited edition package! Magic ink cards and paint brush anyone? The illustration on the cover of the album looks fantastic too, if anyone knows who's super talents created this I'd love to know.

warm feet

YAY to finishing projects!! I finally completed more of these little booties which I have had on the go for some time. Perfect timing though I think, since the weather here in Melbourne is so cold this week. Brrrr!

Now, if only I can find enough time to finish that softie project...

etsy : handmade

Quite a while ago I purchased a hand crocheted necklace from Etsy store DAINTYCROCHETBYALY, I loved it so much I bought another...after all it was back when the dollar was at its best! All pieces are original designs by Aly H. and without fail every time I wear one it attracts compliments or starts a conversation. Aly's current pieces have a slightly different look to the two I own plus there are also brooches and hair pieces now available.
